Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) as well as many other high technology companies have requested that the U.S. Supreme Court make it harder for government officials to access people’s sensitive cellphone data. A 44-page brief was filed with the court on Monday night in a dispute on whether or not the police should have a warrant before obtaining data that could reveal anyone’s whereabouts. This brief was signed by Apple Inc.(NASDAQ: AAPL), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB), Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR), and Snap Inc (NYSE: SNAP) in hopes that greater privacy protections will be made under the law.

The brief stated that the Supreme Court should clarify that people should not lose protections against government intrusion when it comes to digital data that can reveal personal information.

"That users rely on technology companies to process their data for limited purposes does not mean that they expect their intimate data to be monitored by the government without a warrant," the brief said.
