Jeff Bezos to Step Down as Amazon Chief Executive Officer and Head to Space

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos is scheduled to fly on July 20th in the New Shepard rocketship developed by his space company, Blue Origin. Mr. Bezos will be succeeded by Andy Jassy, the current Chief Executive Officer of Amazon Web Services as Bezos plans to step down as Chief Executive Officer on July 5th. The Company stock price is trading around USD 3,184 during the afternoon trading session at the time of writing.

In an Instagram post, Bezos said that “I want to go on this flight because it’s a thing I’ve wanted to do all my life. It’s an adventure. It’s a big deal for me.” He will be joined by his younger brother and best friend, Mark Bezos.

Blue Origin Federation, LLC is an aerospace manufacturer and sub-orbital spaceflight services company founded by Jeff Bezos back on September 8th, 2000. Blue Origin auctioned its New Shepard first ticket online with the proceedings being donated to Blue Origin’s education foundation, Club for the Future. Currently, the high bid is at USD 2.8 Million with the auction ending this Saturday, June 12th.

According to the Blue Origin website, the New Shepard is an 11-minute fully autonomous flight featuring a comfortable crew capsule and a zero-gravity experience. The winner of the bid would need to go through a day-long training session set by Blue Origin that includes “mission and vehicle overviews, in-depth safety briefings, mission simulation and instruction on your in-flight activities such as operational procedures, communications and maneuvering in a weightless environment.”
