On Friday, International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) introduced a quantum computer that handles 50 quantum qubits while also making a 20 qubit system as well that will be available through their cloud computing platform.
Companies like IBM, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL), and a startup called Rigetti have been competing to build use quantum systems. These machines process information in ways that are different from traditional computers using quantum physics. Other built systems compared to the quantum computer only have limited capabilities and can perform calculations that could also be completed on a conventional supercomputer. A 50 qubit machine can complete tasks that are very difficult to simulate without quantum technology, compared to normal computers that store information as either a 1 or 0.
IBM is also announcing an upgrade to their quantum cloud software system. The company suggests that quantum systems greater than 50 qubits can be simulated using clever mathematical tricks on conventional computers leading to new innovations.
