Facebook not on the list for White House social media summit

Published on: 09 Jul, 2019

Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) said on Monday that it had not been invited to an upcoming White House social media summit.

The White House has declined to speak on who will attend the occasion on July 11th. When asked if it had been invited, a Facebook spokesman replied that it had not. Twitter declined to say on Monday if it had been invited or would take part. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it would be present.

White House spokesperson Judd Deere stated that the event is designed to “bring together digital leaders for a robust conversation on the opportunities and challenges of today’s online environment.”

While President Trump will speak at the summit, several conservatives have stated their attendance on social media, including Bill Mitchell, a Trump supporter who hosts an online show. The conversation will begin at reportedly 3 p.m. EDT on Thursday.

The White House not giving out an invitation to Facebook does not come as a surprise. Trump has regularly attacked both Facebook and Twitter, despite his active engagement on both platforms. He even has claimed on multiple occasions that he would not have been elected without Twitter and Facebook.

In March, Trump tweeted that “Facebook, Google and Twitter, not to mention the Corrupt Media, are sooo on the side of the Radical Left Democrats. But fear not, we will win anyway, just like we did before!”

All of the above-mentioned companies have denied political bias.

In April, Trump met with Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey and took a great deal of time to inquire about some of his lost Twitter followers. Trump currently has one of the most-followed accounts on Twitter with over 61 million followers.
