Apple Possibly Dropping Qualcomm Components

Published on: 01 Nov, 2017

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced plans to possibly drop chips for iPhones and iPads supplied by Qualcomm Inc. that might take in effect in fall of 2018. This plan followed a change in supply arrangements where QUALCOMM, Inc.(NASDAQ: QCOM) has stopped providing some software for Apple to test their chips in their iPhone designs leading to a multinational legal dispute over Qualcomm’s licensing terms to Apple.

Although Qualcomm has supplied Apple’s products and modems for several years, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) has also provided half of Apple’s modem chips for iPhones recently.

The company has recently acquired a firm that would let it replace more of Qualcomm’s chips in the various devices. However, it is too early to say whether or not Apple fully intends to drop Qualcomm by next year since Apple will most likely make several contingency plans for different suppliers.
