Amazon.com, Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) new system called Amazon Key will have the ability to drop off packages directly into shoppers’ homes where users can use a lock and camera controls to allow delivery associates to bring in goods into their houses. Temporary passcodes for friends and other delivery service workers can be created to enter homes as well.

For more than a year, Amazon has been in the works on testing this new system to help gain sales from consumers who aren’t able to make it home to receive an order in person or prevent packages stolen from their doorstep.

Amazon Prime members can pay $249.99 and up for a cloud controlled camera and lock that the online retailer offers to install right at home. Delivery associates are to ring a doorbell or knock when arriving at a home. If not greeted, workers press unlock in a mobile app where Amazon checks the systems to ensure the correct associate and package are present. The camera will then stream a video to the customer who can watch the in-home delivery take place until the home is left locked. This new service is expected to take place beginning on November 8 in 37 U.S. locations.
