Amazon Expands its Cloud Service in China

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) on Tuesday announced to opened a second cloud-computing data center in China, the world’s second largest economy.

Amazon Web Services, Inc. will partner with China’s Ningxia Western Cloud Data Technology Co. Ltd. to launch its second AWS China Region. The first AWS China Region is located in Beijing, operated by Sinnet.

“Together with our partner NWCD, and with deep appreciation of the support we’ve received from the Zhongwei municipal government and Ningxia government, we’re excited to announce the launch of the AWS China (Ningxia) Region, operated by NWCD. The second AWS Region in China is part of AWS’s ongoing commitment to offer best-in-class cloud technologies to Chinese customers,” said Andy Jassy, CEO, AWS, said in a press release on Tuesday.

Cloud computing market is growing rapidly in China. According to IDC, public cloud spending in China, saw a 55.6% year-over-year growth in the first half of 2017. However, Amazon will face strong competition with local tech giants including Alibaba and Tencent, who has invested heavily in cloud computing businesses in the recent years.

"For years, AWS and our partners have had an enthusiastic base of customers in China, a country with one of the world's largest and most dynamic cloud ecosystems," Andy Jassy said.

Amazon shares are trading at $1,168 per share. The stock is up about 56 percent this year.
